The Torajans are famous for their monumental funerals, often lasting a week and involving public animal sacrifice. Legend has it that the spirits of the sacrificed water buffalo accompany the human souls to the Torajan equivalent of heaven. The funeral finishes with the dead being placed in stone tombs like these. Tau-Taus, or wooden-figurines resembling the dead, are often left at grave sites along with food and water.
